Basically Myron Bolitar screwed up. His job was to protect someone. He fell in love with that someone and then that someone died. End of story. Now he's dropped out and run away to the Caribbean to escape his guilt and drown in the arms of some brunette. The simple life: alcohol, sex and small bikinis. It's all a bit out of character really.
But now everything that he left behind has come back to haunt him. His friend and colleague, Esperanza Diaz, is in trouble; murder trouble. The victim is one of his own clients and the case is water-tight. She doesn't want his help, she won't even talk to him. He must battle for her against her wishes with only the back-up of his closest friend, the mildly psychotic Winsor Lockwood III, who - rather alarmingly - is starting to seem like the only rock in Myron's troubled existence . . .
