Jillian Sinclair, growing up in the sixties, is one of a generation for whom marriage is the ultimate goal. She expects to live happily ever after with her clever property developer husband in Cambridge. She is certain that she can overcome any problems: her husband's family's disapproval of her for not being good enough; her own parents' divorce; her sister;'s alternative life style; her husband's self-containment. She believes that if she works hard enough and loves well enough it will all work out and no one need know of the problems that hide beneath the surface.
