In Occupied Japan, a routine investigation by American authorities led to the shocking discovery that thirty-nine American POWs had been beheaded. Eight others, survivors of an American bomber shot down in 1945, had suffered an even worse fate at the hands of Japanese scientists. As victims of Japan's biological warfare program, their internal organs were removed, their blood replaced with sea water. An even more repulsive crime, if possible, came after the war, when the United States essentially released the convicted perpetrators of these atrocities for political gain.
'The Fallen' tells this appalling and all-but-forgotten tale of science, justice, and military power at their worst in excruciating but necessary detail.
