Fifteen-year-old Gustine is a prisoner of her beautiful blue dress. Followed at night through the back alleys of Sunderland by a malevolent woman to prevent her escaping with the fantastical gown, Gustine entices the men who are attracted to it. Her only concern is to keep her fragile baby alive.
Implicated in a notorious Scottish murder case, surgeon Henry Chiver is attempting a new life with his loving fiancee, hindered only by a chronic shortage of licit cadavers for his anatomy class. Doctor and dress lodger come together in the filthy East End of the city, itself held hostage by cholera. Gustine will assist the doctor, if he will help her - until Henry's greed and growing obsession with her child challenges her loyalty to him, and Gustine must turn to her mortal enemy in the battle for her baby's life.
