A Robert Fairfax Mystery.
It's 1761. Travelling up to the country home of his new employer, Robert Fairfax is aware that this lonely stretch of road has lately been the haunt of a notorious highwayman. But nothing can prepare him for the shocking discovery of the Stamford to London stagecoach, tipped into a ditch. The driver has been shot through the head and the two passengers inside are dead.
Investigating at the behest of his employer, the local JP, Fairfax soon suspects that this is more than simple highway robbery. One of the two corpses is apparently a wealthy banker, Nicholas Twelvetree. But Nicholas Twelvetree is in the neighbouring town, alive and well - and paralysed with fear. The other corpse appears to be that of a harmless lunatic escaped from a local asylum - a revelation made by a Methodist preacher who is universally disliked. But the coach records state that there were three passengers on board that day. So where is the third - a missing woman whose anxious husband still awaits her return? Fairfax must piece together his most baffling puzzle - knowing that a ruthless killer will stop at nothing to prevent him . . .
