It's been a long time since a book has grabbed me so quickly. I love how the story is being told from two different time lines. Tudor doesn't hold back with grittiness and paints his scenes well. Never going into too much graphic detail but giving the reader just enough description to let your imagination vividly fill in the rest. The less you expect with these books, the more you enjoy them. I expected too much with this book, and because of this, I enjoyed it less when I began reading it. As I started to see the book for what it was, a good quality, fast-paced thriller, the more I found myself liking it. It is a short read coming in at around 340 pages, and I believe the author wringed as much out of the pages as possible. Initially, I felt the book read similar to a Stephen King novel, albeit in an English setting, with the story focusing on a group of adolescent kids in the 80's, living in a small town. The novel tends to shed these King comparisons as it moves away from any possible supernatural themes and grounds itself more in reality. The story progresses through dual-timelines, alternating (mostly) between 1986 and 2016. The dual-timelines is implemented effectively and provides an uneasy flow of questions and answers, which trickle out when required, to throw you off just that little bit more. The shift in years works to unsettle you and to keep you guessing, bringing with it an overall sour note to the progression of the book, adding flavours of melancholy, sadness and regret to its aged characters. This unease keeps the tone of the book a little darker than most, and does well to paint its setting with the age of three decades past. The Chalk Man is the first book I've sat down with for 2018 and I hope the rest of my choices this year follow suit. It's good. Very good in fact. I read more than half way in my first sitting and have been burying my nose in it every lunch break since.
Switching between past & present Ed our narator takes us back to his adolescence or what some would describe better days... not for this you gang of 5 unfortunately in this eerily constructed debut thriller. Tudor holds the suspence between chapters well and urges you to read just one more...if only I could stop at one.

What a fantastic read. It's the book of the month at the bookstore I work in and my manager recommended I read it to help with sales. I read the whole thing in two days and had myself gaping in the whole last fifth. I was intending to put it down and make some dinner, but I just couldn't eat when I had 60 pages left.
The ending had me smirking because something I guessed all along was true, but there were a few fair and logical surprises along the way.
I personally wanted to see more of Gav and Hoppo at the end. Loved the last parting with Nicky and its parallel to their first parting.
Tudor's writing flair had me hooked, from the humour and one-liners to the witty dialogue and the gradual revealing of the pieces of the puzzle. One of the few books I've read that goes back and forth in chronology effectively enough for me.
I have to admit, Eddie's father was my favourite character.

The front cover was the first thing that got my attention with the creepy and intreging chalk drawing. Reading this book all the way through I thought it was a amazing debut novel for CJ Tudor and I found it very hard to stop when my attention was needed elsewhere.
Being a fan of crime literature and authors like Stephen King I found this book to be quite reminisant of Stephen King's "The Body".

This book reads like an old school mystery.I felt like I was back in the 80’s living out old past times..apart from being stalked by a creepy chalk man & finding dead bodies around where I live.When I came to the end of this I felt like I was saying goodbye to my friends.I didn't want it to end!The dark humor,gore,mystery & character development really made for a suspenseful read. 5 Chalky stars!! - Jessica (QBD)

'The Chalk Man' is so good, I never wanted to stop reading it. Sleep? Who needs sleep when you can solve a murder? I found myself trying to solve it whenever the book wasn't in my hands. This debut author crafted so many red herrings, I devoured it within the weekend.

My fingernails are bitten to the quick thanks to the thrilling story telling and the twists that sneak up on you like a child who should be in bed. I didn't even have to start the book to get sucked in, the prologue did it for me... I was hooked. I had to know who the almond eyed girl was laying in the leaves. I had to know why her head was severed, why was it taken by someone with a bag of chalk... WHAT ON EARTH IS GOING ON?!?
This is such a creepy, engaging story that took me from the past to the present with so many twists and turns. Something that began as an adolescent game became so much more. I would predict the storyline and think I had it in the bag, but I'd be wrong so many times, I had no idea. I love a book that can keep me guessing with such a satisfyingly haunting ending. You have to read this! But be careful... you will be out of touch with family and friends until you finish ;-) - Sam-Maree (QBD)

If you have read The Dry by Jane Harper and are looking for a thriller with more bite I highly recommend The Chalk Man by C.J Tudor.
Its hard to believe this is a first novel for C.J Tudor as it reads like a good Stephan King novel. Set in both 1986 and 2016 it all twists together as you dig deeper into the pages. The Chalk Man is one of those books you'll want to buy for everyone you know just so you have someone to talk to about it. - Courtney (QBD)

I was urged to read this book by a friend. I was apprehensive and not overly excited as I am in no way a crime fiction reader. Two chapters in, I was hooked and surprised. I needed to know what came next. There were parts of this book that made me physically ill with anticipation. The last few pages of this book will send a shiver through your spine. This is a well written thriller murder mystery that unravels the hidden demons of a town's past. This is more than just a simple british murder mystery. The events throughout this book will keep you shocked and lightheartedly entertained at the same time. Not since Jane Harper's The Dry have I enjoyed such a thrilling, suspenseful and pyschological read. It's hard to believe this is C.J. Tudor's first novel. I was gripped form the very first paragraph.

You expect to be misled when reading a good mystery but C.J Tudor manages to tie up all the loose ends, then untie one just to keep you on the hook. The element of mystery is introduced via the framework of a rites of passage novel reminiscent of Stephen King's 'Stand By Me'.
