Looking back, it all started on the day of the fair and the terrible accident. When twelve-year-old Eddie first met the Chalk Man.

It was the Chalk Man who gave Eddie the idea for the drawings- a way to leave secret messages between his group of friends.

And it was fun, to start with, until the figures led them to the body of a young girl.

That was thirty years ago and Ed thought the past was behind him. Then he receives a letter containing just two things- a piece of chalk, and a drawing of a stick figure.

As history begins to repeat itself, Ed realises the game was never over...

Everyone has secrets.

Everyone is guilty of something.

And children are not always so innocent.

Tudor's ability to invoke compassion and sympathy for some of her incredibly flawed - and occasionally downright awful - characters was truly disconcerting. Throughout and well after having finished reading this novel, I found myself analysing my own beliefs about where the line falls between "good" and "bad" and "right" and "wrong." - Elinor (QBD)

It's been a long time since a book has grabbed me so quickly. I love how the story is being told from two different time lines. Tudor doesn't hold back with grittiness and paints his scenes well. Never going into too much graphic detail but giving the reader just enough description to let your imagination vividly fill in the rest. A definite recommendation to any psychological thriller fans. - Damien (QBD)

Imagine if Stephen King had set one of his stories in Midsomer rather than Maine. Bad things happen in a small English village and secrets and memories that a group of childhood friends thought were laid to rest come back to haunt them as adults. The revelations coiled within this tautly written tale will surprise and thrill readers who enjoy a creepy mystery. 'Stranger Things' fans will - Elizabeth (QBD)

Chalk Man had me with so many questions, even up to the last chapter! I felt like I couldn't get enough of this book, garnering every 5 minutes I could to get a few pages in. The characters are well fleshed out and relatable; you find yourself empathising with even some of the most despicable ones. This was a disturbing insight into human nature and I will be keeping an eye out for the next C.J Tudor releases. - Sara (QBD)

C J Tudor has masterfully usurped Jane Harper's throne for best debut thriller, ushering in the new year with a chilling bang. Reminiscent of Fiona Barton's The Child, with a dash of Stephen King's tales of children's worlds being warped by an evil happening, this one threatened to keep me in the fetal position underneath the sheets after each tentative reading session. Highly recommended - Mason (QBD)

“Start at the beginning. The problem was that none of us ever agreed on the exact beginning” What is the beginning? Is it when youre born or when youre old enough to function for yourself, or even when a life-chaniging event alters the way you see the world? Does your childhood play a part in how you develop in your adult life? C.J Tudor explores this in her fantastic debut novel 'The Chalk Man' where she follows the lives of five friends whose childhoods were ravaged by disasters. These friends find solace in having their own secret codes and signals in the forms of chalk figures, a relief from their own troubles at home. This is until one day a chalk figure leads them to the dismembered body of Elisa Rendell. Their friendship was really doomed to crack from the beginning. This edge of darkness follows them to adulthood where The Chalk Man threatens their livelihood and takes action when they try to solve the mystery of who actually killed Elisa. Tudors depth and perception of how events from childhood can affect the ourcomes of adulthood are subtly hidden in layers of masterful suspense and thrilling plot twists which truly highlight her talent as an author. As a debut novel this is a brilliant read and I cannot wait to see where she goes next. Honestly 'The Chalk Man” is one of the best novels that I have read in a long time. - Mon Qbd Books Blacktown - Wade (QBD)

C J Tudor has done well in a debut novel to emphasise the psychological thrills, leaving the reader guessing what will happen next. I found that despite the twists and thirty-year time gap, the narrative flowed well. The less you expect with these books, the more you enjoy them. I expected too much with this book, and because of this, I enjoyed it less when I began reading it. As I started to see the book for what it was, a good quality, fast-paced thriller, the more I found myself liking it. It is a short read coming in at around 340 pages, and I believe the author wringed as much out of the pages as possible. Initially, I felt the book read similar to a Stephen King novel, albeit in an English setting, with the story focusing on a group of adolescent kids in the 80's, living in a small town. The novel tends to shed these King comparisons as it moves away from any possible supernatural themes and grounds itself more in reality. The story progresses through dual-timelines, alternating (mostly) between 1986 and 2016. The dual-timelines is implemented effectively and provides an uneasy flow of questions and answers, which trickle out when required, to throw you off just that little bit more. The shift in years works to unsettle you and to keep you guessing, bringing with it an overall sour note to the progression of the book, adding flavours of melancholy, sadness and regret to its aged characters. This unease keeps the tone of the book a little darker than most, and does well to paint its setting with the age of three decades past. The setting is only as good as its characters and unfortunately, for me, the protagonist, and other characters, were flat and a little unlikable. Instead of bec - Paul (QBD)

The Chalk Man was entertaining, and kept me turning the pages fairly easily as the story flipped between two time lines with quite a few twists thrown in. What a fantastic read. It's the book of the month at the bookstore I work in and my manager recommended I read it to help with sales. I read the whole thing in two days and had myself gaping in the whole last fifth. I was intending to put it down and make some dinner, but I just couldn't eat when I had 60 pages left. The ending had me smirking because something I guessed all along was true, but there were a few fair and logical surprises along the way. I personally wanted to see more of Gav and Hoppo at the end. Loved the last parting with Nicky and its parallel to their first parting. Tudor's writing flair had me hooked, from the humour and one-liners to the witty dialogue and the gradual revealing of the pieces of the puzzle. One of the few books I've read that goes back and forth in chronology effectively enough for me. I have to admit, Eddie's father was my favourite character. The front cover was the first thing that got my attention with the creepy and intreging chalk drawing. Reading this book all the way through I thought it was a amazing debut novel for CJ Tudor and I found it very hard to stop when my attention was needed elsewhere. Being a fan of crime literature and authors like Stephen King I found this book to be quite reminisant of Stephen King's "The Body". The story bounces between 1986 where a small group of friends find themselves mixed up in some strange happenings in a small town and present day where the authur slowly reveals the mystry of what happened in that small town back in the 80's. I found The Chalk Man really intreging and it kept me guessing to the end. Who knew chalk could be sinister? If you are a fan of Stephen King, then you will love 'The Chalk Man'. It had me hooked after the first chapter. Eddie, Fat Gaz, Nicky, Hoppo and Metal Mickey are a group of friends who create their own secret code, chalk men. It is a simple little game until an unknown chalk man leads them to a headless body, and everything changes. Thirty years later, Eddie gets a letter with a chalk figure in the mail. Turns out all his friends got one, and the next thing they know, one of the gang turns up dead. Now they have to figure out what happened all those years ago, and what happened now. 'The Chalk Man' is a suspenseful thriller that will prevent you from putting it down. - Erin (QBD)

In 1986, 12 year old Ed's group of friends discover something horrific in their small town. Thirty years later, secrets come to life in a most bizarre way. 'The Chalk Man' is so good, I never wanted to stop reading it. Sleep? Who needs sleep when you can solve a murder? I found myself trying to solve it whenever the book wasn't in my hands. This debut author crafted so many red herrings, I devoured it within the weekend. This book is like Stranger Things, but with more murder. - Karina (QBD)

C.J. Tudor taps into the psychological side of thrillers in his new book, The Chalk Man. The characters are as untrustworthy as they are cunning, with more twists and turns than a standard 'whodunnit'. If you liked the flashback nature of The Dry, you will love the voice of 12-year-old Eddie as he recalls the darkest moments of his childhood, leading to question the cause/effect of small actions. - Rosie (QBD)

Remember that movie “Stand by me”? Well that is based off Stephen King's “The Body” and if you enjoyed the movie or the book you will be besotted with debut author C. J. Tudor's “The Chalk Man”. My fingernails are bitten to the quick thanks to the thrilling story telling and the twists that sneak up on you like a child who should be in bed. Add to the mixture a smattering of dark humour and a writing style of a seasoned best seller and you have “The Chalk Man”, 2018's first must read. - Kimberley (QBD)

I didn't even have to start the book to get sucked in, the prologue did it for me... I was hooked. I had to know who the almond eyed girl was laying in the leaves. I had to know why her head was severed, why was it taken by someone with a bag of chalk... WHAT ON EARTH IS GOING ON?!? This is such a creepy, engaging story that took me from the past to the present with so many twists and turns. Something that began as an adolescent game became so much more. I would predict the storyline and think I had it in the bag, but I'd be wrong so many times, I had no idea. I love a book that can keep me guessing with such a satisfyingly haunting ending. You have to read this! But be careful... you will be out of touch with family and friends until you finish ;-) - Sam-Maree (QBD)

If you have read The Dry by Jane Harper and are looking for a thriller with more bite I highly recommend The Chalk Man by C.J Tudor. Its hard to believe this is a first novel for C.J Tudor as it reads like a good Stephan King novel. Set in both 1986 and 2016 it all twists together as you dig deeper into the pages. The Chalk Man is one of those books you'll want to buy for everyone you know just so you have someone to talk to about it. - Courtney (QBD)

I was urged to read this book by a friend. I was apprehensive and not overly excited as I am in no way a crime fiction reader. Two chapters in, I was hooked and surprised. I needed to know what came next. There were parts of this book that made me physically ill with anticipation. I doubt that I will ever be able to look at a chalk drawing the same again. - Chaille (QBD)

The last few pages of this book will send a shiver through your spine. This is a well written thriller murder mystery that unravels the hidden demons of a town's past. This is more than just a simple british murder mystery. The events throughout this book will keep you shocked and lightheartedly entertained at the same time. The Chalkman gives back credit to the real thriller genre. - Christopher (QBD)

Not since Jane Harper's The Dry have I enjoyed such a thrilling, suspenseful and pyschological read. It's hard to believe this is C.J. Tudor's first novel. I was gripped form the very first paragraph. I would not be surprised if this is the best thriller read for 2018. - Stacey (QBD)

C.J Tudor's debut novel flicks between the 1980's, and present time, in small town England to piece together the anatomy of a thriller. You expect to be misled when reading a good mystery but C.J Tudor manages to tie up all the loose ends, then untie one just to keep you on the hook. Gripping, eerie and not at all what I expected; fans of Stephen King or S.J Watson will find this is a must-read. - Lauren (QBD)

This is one of those rare tales that gets under your skin and stubbornly remains there long after you've shelved the book. The element of mystery is introduced via the framework of a rites of passage novel reminiscent of Stephen King's 'Stand By Me'. The strong sense of time and place is as evocative as the vivid images of innocence lost and the he feeling of regret that permeates the novel. - Nola (QBD)

The Chalk Man is a debut thriller that will leave you with chills. Told partly in flashback, it's the story of Eddie, a 40-something teacher with a past full of horror and a penchant for collecting things that don't belong to him. Slowly the reader is pulled into Eddie's world as him and his friends try to navigate parents, hormones, creepy chalk figures and dead bodies. - Shannon (QBD)
