When Buck, a rangy mixed-breed used to a comfortable life as a family dog, is stolen by a gardener and sold to dog traffickers, he finds himself thrust onto a team of sled dogs run ragged in the harsh winter of the Klondike goldrush. Unaccustomed to the savage, unruly ways of the North, terrorized by men who act more like beasts, Buck learns the ways of the wild by trial and error. Gradually, the last traces of Buck's soft, pampered existence are erased as ancient instincts, deeply embedded for generations, call him into that wild. Superbly detailed, no other novel has so clearly shown the fragile separation between tame and wild, between man and beast.
