In a decade marked by industrial strife, BBC comedy steadfastly kept up the nation's pecker. This typically 'Are You Being Served?' humour made the British stiff upper lip quiver with laughter during those troubled times, but there was comedy to suit all tastes during this colourful period.
Monty Python's brand of surrealistic humour altered TV comedy forever and John Cleese also conquered sitcoms with frantic 'Fawlty Towers'. 'Last of the Summer Wine' established a lasting third-age success; 'Morecombe and Wise' was at its glorious peak; comedy gained its feminist stripes in 'The Liver Birds' and 'The Two Ronnies' was the apotheosis of Messrs Corbett and Barker's fine partnership, the latter also excelling in prison sitcom 'Porridge'.
