The word "footy" has become a synonym for a myriad of sports, but for most Australians "footy" means only one thing: Australian Rules Football. Rugby might be "the game they play in heaven", soccer "the beautiful game", league "the greatest game of all", but out on the suburban parks and schoolyards of the Australian continent, from Darwin to Deloraine, from Broome to Brisbane, only one game, Aussie Rules, is king.
From these humble nurseries of footballing talent, many gifted players make it through to the rough and tumble of the big time, the AFL, the most popular sporting competition in the country. In the AFL Centenary Year of 1996, 100 star players were inducted as inaugural Members of the Australian Football Hall of Fame. Of that 100, twelve were chosen as Legends. Also honoured were coaches, media identities, umpires and administrators who have made outstanding contributions to Australian Rules Football. Now, four years on, that honour roll has become a little bit longer. A new Legend and eight new Members were inducted both in 1999 and 2000.
