The Illustrated Companion to the Television Series
'The Aristocrats' follows the eighteenth-century lives and fortunes of the four spirited daughters of the second Duke and Duchess of Richmond whose homes were at Goodwood near Surrey and Richmond House in Whitehall. Each married famous men: Caroline to Henry Fox, father of Charles James Fox; Emily to the Duke of Leinster; Louisa to Tom Conolly, the richest man in Ireland; Sarah narrowly avoided being Queen of England, had illicit love affairs and became mother to a dynasty of military and imperial heroes. The author has used the sisters' own voices (through their letters) to give insight into their daily lives and the book is illustrated with stills from the television production and with a wealth of contemporary material - portraits, correspondence, furniture and china, clothes and architectural plans drawn up by the sisters - to offer us a view of their daily lives and preoccupations, their houses, clothes, correspondence, shopping habits, health and holidays . . .
