There are few more enduring and better known teams’ nicknames in the world than the All Blacks. Even in places where rugby is little played. In New Zealand, there is no need to qualify the name. Rugby gave New Zealand its distinctive national colour of black and the All Blacks have so powerful a hold on the national consciousness that many other sports teams have concocted nicknames derived from the All Blacks. It is the excellence of the players across the eras that has helped imbed the name, but that name (or powerful brand, as business jargon would have it) would mean little if it were not for the efforts of players for more than 120 years. This book is their roll call: an alphabetical and statistical listing of every All Black who has contributed to New Zealand being the best rugby nation on earth—most of the time.
