Duncan, slow and withdrawn, is afraid of everything in the small seaside town where he lives: the other boys who call him names; his domineering, demanding mother whom he looks after; even the sea itself. Only the young fisherman Ted Flint shows him kindness, and when he tells Duncan about the seas of the world, stretching for miles, he sees a chance for escape. Until the fatal night that Ted Flint launches his boat in a storm. Then, in his coufused mind, Duncan vows revenge on them all.
