Shrouded in cloud and snow, on a mountain high in the Pyrenees, the monastery of St Lazarus is a forbidding place. Its ramparts and battlements sequester a secret so important, so dangerous, that it has aroused the interest of the King of France, the Templar Order, the Cistercians, the Bishop of Toulouse and the ambitious Inquisitor, Rainerio Sacconi. It guards something so sacred to its keepers that they are prepared to kill before they will permit its revelation.
Christian de St Armand, a Templar squire, writes an account of several hazardous days passed at the monastery with his master, Andre. We follow him not only into tunnels 'mental and physical', but also through a robust world whose savageness is necessarily tempered by faith, courage and strong spiritual repression.
