The book introduces the central issues in teaching Physical Education in the secondary school. It is divided into four parts; the curriculum, improving teaching, improving learning, and the future.
The book contains chapters on all key aspects of provision, including planning, teaching methods, assessment and special educational needs. Also included are chapters on areas that are often neglected, for example the place of the subject within the wider curriculum, the teaching of talented pupils, and subject leadership.
"As authors we set ourselves the somewhat obvious but nevertheless important challenge of writing a book to help teachers support and develop pupils' learning. We asked ourselves two simple questions: (i) what information do teachers need to enable them to reflect appropriately on physical education and (ii) what support would they want in order to help them teach more effectively?
As a result, the book contains chapters on all key aspects of provision, including planning, teaching methods, assessment and special educational needs. We have also included chapters on areas that are often neglected, for example the place of the subject within the wider curriculum, the teaching of talented pupils, and subject leadership. We hope this blend of chapters provides both comprehensive and distinctive coverage."
