Bill Gates’s famously bold prediction—that one day, every home would have a computer—is now, if anything, a huge understatement, with many households boasting multiple machines. It is predicted that in 2005 sales of PCs will exceed 9m in the UK alone. In the third quarter of 2004, 52 per cent of households in the UK (12.9 million) could access the Internet from home, compared with just 9 per cent (2.3 million) in the same quarter of 1998. There is currently no consumer level text which covers the basics of PC maintenance and home networking in the same volume to meet the needs of the typical household PC user. Home PC Maintenance and Networking will fill that gap, appealing to home users. Most tasks on a modern PC are within the abilities of the ordinary user: more D-I-Y than Hi-Tech. Home PC Maintenance and Networking will equip the home user to carry out the bulk of maintenance and upgrade tasks for both XP and Vista operating systems using (for the most part) a single screwdriver and standard software tools. Timed to coincide with the launch of Windows Vista it will maximise the market, covering both the new Operating System and XP.
