This is a story of a family with a secret at its heart. Shortly before his mother, Dee, dies she tells her son Thomas that she thinks her death is a punishment. Thomas, whose own emotional life is complicated, tries to piece together his parents' lives in order to make sense of his mother's words. His search takes us back to Cyprus and the 50s when Dee was an army officer's wife during the period of the island's independence struggle. As he unearths letters and photos Dee's story emerges: she is an attractive woman and in the warmth and colour of the Mediterranean, she feels alive for the first time.
Pursued by both a handsome Cypriot and a dashing Major she doesn't realise that her closest friend is also an MI6 agent who is hunting a notorious terrorist. He knows everything about Dee, who cannot see the danger she is in. Mawer has written another exciting, complex novel involving big moral choices. He is becoming a modern-day Graham Greene.
