Surfing waves has inspired artists and determined Australia's national identity. This series of interviews looks at our relationships with the ocean.
Ever since Duke Kahanomoku gave a demonstration of surfboard riding at Freshwater Beach in 1914, the Australian identity has partly been determined by our relationship with the beach and the ocean. 'Swell Dreaming' talks to the artists, rebels and entrepreneurs, traces the emergence of surfing through its rise in the 1960s, its meeting with the counter culture, rise of professionalism and current relationship with mum and dad investors who check the prices of Billabong in the paper each day. Interviewees include Nat Young, Midge Farrelly, Barton Lynch and Layne Beachley among other well known surfers.
