Rebecca Hallam, chafing at the restrictions of the life of a girl in New Bedford in 1784, longs to sail on her father's whaling ship and stows away; Joshua Lockwood, indentured to Rebecca's father, is terrified of the ocean. Their heroics when the ship is caught in a hurricane earns Joshua his freedom, and Rebecca her father's respect.
