For Lucy, returning to her childhood home in San Francisco is more like a nightmare than reality. Her father is dead, murdered, his body dumped in the sea.
Why would anyone want to kill a retired professor? The police want to know. So does Lucy, but she is scared of what she might find out. The past is painful anyway - she had fled her marriage and San Francisco for New York after the death of her baby son. Now back, she must dive into the deep, deep waters of her past to try to make sense of this new horror.
But Lucy's memories are oddly incomplete. Sometimes they even contradict what she is discovering, and if she can't trust her memory, can she trust anything?
It seems that something in the past is casting a long, dark shadow across the sun-drenched present - a shadow with the power to kill. And coming face to face with it may be more than Lucy can take . . .
