The discovery that cane sugar was being refined commercially in a soap boiler behind an inn in Ormskirk fifty years after cane had been introduced to the West Indies was a surprise to Mona Duggan. So she decided to research the industry as it became established in the North West, an aspect of local history which has previously been neglected.
