Henry Blain is chief cook at Strangeways Prison. The stomachs of 1600 prisoners are at his mercy, and he plays them like a maestro. The menu reflects Blain's moods and its effects echo in the prison's plumbing.
A lover of Shakespeare, exotic plants and women, Blain meets his match when riots break out at Strangeways. Journalists and members of the public flock to his house for a front row seat at the riots, but Blain is quick to turn this to his advantage. A passionate affair with a reporter brings spectres of past loves back to Blain, and his garden begins to yield its secrets.
Originally published in French, 'Strange Ways' is an anarchic, irreverent meditation of food and digestion, seasoned with a lage measure of sex and a handful of murders.
