The author writes: 'I can't draw horses. That's how I knew I wasn't good at art. Life is very black and white like that when you're seven. My mate Brendon . . . now he could draw horses! That meant whenever we had to do a school project all the girls lined up to get him to draw horses for them. It didn't matter what the topic was, the girls always flocked around Brendon saying, "Brendon, can you draw a horse on a pyramid", or "Brendon, draw me a horse realigning the solar panels on the Hubbell Telescope". From my seat at the back of the classroom, I sat sulking, bemoaning my lack of artistic talent. And so it was I came to find some kind of solace in the humble stickman . . . '
