When a helm control blows, the "U S S Voyager" goes into orbit around the nearest planet to make the needed repairs. The crew has a dilemma on its hands because although the planet has resources that would allow the crew to repair the ship, the planet Sardalia is a pre-warp society and contact with it is strictly forbidden by the Prime Directive. Captain Janeway has little choice, however, but to respond when the Sardalians hail the ship. The people seem friendly enough, in fact, a little too friendly. They seem more interested in a cultural exchange than helping the crew with their repairs. Suddenly, Paris and Kim find themselves in a deadly situation on Sardalia and lose contact with the ship. Now, Janeway must find a way to settle a dispute that could mean death not only for her crew, but other races as well!
