The novel covers Theodoros P's first twenty-four hours as a teacher on the Greek island of Porphyri, during which he witnesses both his past and future life, as well as Greek history and culture, by means of a febrile and astonishing novelistic distortion of time and space which do not sacrifice the believability and realism of the story and setting. The style oscillates between naturalism and fantasy, lyricism and coarseness, everyday speech and formal prose.
