Unique to the Southern Railway and later the Southern Region were the three electric 'Booster' locomotives - CC1, CC2 and 20003. Their story was touched upon in the Preview Issue of Southern Way, but now we can at last describe the full history and operation of these engines over their 25 years of service. Authors Simon Lilley and John Weynon have between them vast experience in both historical research and electrical engineering. Between them they are ideally placed to chronicle the design, building and operation of these engines and which in some ways were far ahead of their time. The trials and tribulations of their operation, from labour relations to incidents in service, are also chronicled. The highly readable text incorporates many new and fascinating photographs.
