An Account of the True Story which Inspired the Motion Picture 'Paradise Road'.
This book is Colijn's riveting account of her experiences as a prisoner of the Japanese in South-East Asia during the Second World War. The conditions were harsh, terrible; food was scarce and medicine unavailable. Held in captivity for over three years, more than a third of the women in Helen's camp died of disease or starvation.
Though they had no musical instruments, the women in the camp had their voices, and from memory wrote out classical works written for orchestra and piano and gave wonderful concerts for their fellow prisoners. Their music helped to sustain both those who sang and those who listened, and is truly remarkable testimony to their courage, resilience and ingenuity.
The movie, 'Paradise Road', stars Glenn Close, Frances McDormand, Pauline Collins, Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Ehle, and Julianna Margulies.
