A family has trouble coping after seven-year old Johnny is killed by a car. Johnny's twin sister, Susie, stops speaking, while their older sister Johanna has conversations with Johnny, even though she knows he's not there. Johanna hopes her elderly, eccentric Cousin Ruth will be able to help her family heal, but Ruth warns her it takes time. Slowly Johanna comes to terms with her loss as she faces a bully at school and stubbornly refuses to let her family forget Johnny. Finally she insists that it's time for Cousin Ruth to confront Susie. When Cousin Ruth does, Susie responds by giving her snowdrops - Johnny's favourite flower and the first sign of spring - and speaking again.
