A frightened child holds the key to a double murder . . .
For State attorney Gardner Lawson, violent crime comes too close to home when his eight year old son Granville stumbles in on an armed robbery and double murder at a local grocery store. The boy is found unconscious, suffering from concussion and with the imprint of a gun barrel on his forehead. Though the only one who can identify the killer, he wakes up with no memory of the incident.
As the police search continues for a coldblooded murderer, it is increasingly clear that Granville's memory must be restored - though that might expose him to mental trauma. Lawson is faced with a terrible dilemma.
Meanwhile, two suspects have emerged: a rich student at a nearby boarding-school and a local thug with a police record. One of these is a dangerous psychopath who is almost certain to strike again.
Under gentle therapy, Granville is beginning to recall bits and pieces of the horrifying occurrence . . . But will he remember enough in time, and is his own life now in danger?
