Filmmaking on New York, 1966-2006,
'Scenes From The City' celebrates the sometimes glamorous, sometimes gritty but always larger-than-life imagery of the city of New York. This book is a celebration of films made in New York, particularly after a special branch of the Mayors office was formed to support the burgeoning film industry of the city in 1966.
The work of Martin Scorcese and Woody Allen are included as well as classic stills from Midnight Cowboy, Annie Hall and of course Taxi Driver. The captions accompanying each image include commentary from just about every New York filmmaker of note show how shooting in one of the world's greatest and most complicated of cities makes for behind-the-scenes plotlines every bit as scintillating as their "real" filmic ones.
A special section at the back covers landmark TV shows, commercials and music videos shot in the city, including of course Sex and the City and Law and Order. This is a lush snapshot of a city that, through all its moments and eras, can't help being one of the most entrancing visions ever captured on screen.
