This encyclopedia is the most modern military survival handbook available. Based on SAS training and techniques, the book covers every area of survival from the essential items needed in a basic survival kit and how to make the best use of them, to the most sophisticated technology including state-of-the-art GPS navigation equipment.
The book is broken down into different sections covering every aspect of survival across all of the different terrain which can be encountered around the world. The main sections are:
- Essential Survival: Basic techniques of shelter construction, sourcing water, first-aid, fire-making, food, hunting, signalling, navigation, equipment - all of the skills and knowledge which are required in any survival situation.
- Arctic Survival: Detailed entries on shelter, food, equipment, fire-making, specific to the Arctic, any mountain area or conditions of extreme cold.
- Desert Survival: Specialist techniques pertinent to survival in the desert - finding water and preserving supplies, shelter, hunting, hazards, and navigation.
- Jungle Survival: Shelter protection from insects and predators, the plentiful food and water sources, building and maintaining a fire in the moisture-laden atmosphere and navigation problems peculiar to the jungle.
- Escape and Evasion: Unlike most people who find themselves in a survival situation, a soldier on the run from the enemy doesn't want to be found. Normal survival practice needs to be carefully adapted if the aim is to avoid detection. This section explains how.
Entries within each section are arranged in order of survival priority. Techniques, equipment, flora and fauna and terrain are shown in specially commissioned photographs, backed up by detailed artwork where cutaway drawings are required or where photographs cannot show important detail. Each section is also cross-reference back to the main text on Essential Survival.
