Things have got so bad for business that private eye Kazuo Mori has taken up praying to the gods for good things to come. he never used to believe in that stuff but then he never used to need to. A job lifting a stripper called Angel from the clutches of a Yakuza thug called George the Wolf Nishio doesn't promise much but Mori is in no position to be choosy, especially with a new hot-shot agency on the scene undercutting on every job.
But with Angel liberated, Mori's contemplation of a Rainy Season afternoon is interrupted by a phonecall and the offer of a job investigating the death of a high ranking bureaucrat in the Ministry of Health. Mori's client thinks it was murder and murder investigations don't come cheap. Maybe someone was listening to Mori's prayers after all . . .
Mori's investigation takes him deep into a morass of corporate rivalry. Add to that the murderous intentions of George, the draining company of Angel and a new partnership with the student who runs the rival agency and it is clear that one should be careful what one prays for.
