The Russian Matroshka (a set of painted hollow wooden dolls nested one inside the other) became popular just over a century ago. The first Matroshkas portrayed Russian peasants in the festive costumes of different regions, carrying baskets, bundles or bunches of flowers. Although those dolls were fairly expensive they quickly won the hearts of grown-ups and children alike. From that time on Matroshkas have been an all-embracing symbol of Russia and a lasting example of Russian folk art.
