The Reluctant Archbishop.
This is the biography of the Anglican prelate, Robert Runcie, better known as the Archbishop who conducted the marriage ceremony of the Prince and Princess of Wales in July 1981. In this book, experienced biographer Humphrey Carpenter has captured a good deal of his subject's idiosyncratic nature: the personal charm, the delight in the social whirl, even what one of his colleagues perceptively called "his spirituality of struggle". Carpenter paints the picture of a compassionate but vain man, presiding helplessly over the death-throes of the Church of England.
