A truly important book, particularly at this moment. It offers a huge sweep of history and deals with recent Scottish politics in formidable, but never tedious detail. Andrew Marr
A terrific book. Macwhirter covers much more than he does in his TV documentary, and the book combines a broad history of Scotlands relationship with England from the time of Robert the Bruce onwards with a detailed analysis of the rise of the SNP, the creation of the Scottish parliament and the run-up to the referendum. Its a heavyweight, serious book, but its a pleasure to read and its full of shrewd insights. Id recommend it highly. The Guardian
In the 1950s, the Scottish nationalist movement was a fringe movement more concerned with blowing up mailboxes and stealing artefacts; sixty years on, they control the parliament in Scotland and are on the verge of potentially separating the country from the UK. How did this unique movement gain such power so quickly?
In this book to accompany a major four part television series by STV/ITV and The Herald newspaper, renowned commentator Iain Macwhirter looks at the origins, ambitions and changes of the nationalist movement; at how the SNP moved from just 150 members to one of Europes most important parties; how politicians of the UK political scene have shifted and influenced the most major popular movement in British politics. With compelling, exclusive interviews with all the major players of this vital story, Macwhirter expertly weaves analysis and personal anecdotes together to create the definitive history of the road to the referendum - and the story of where the UK might go next.
