Set in the Georgetown neighbourhood of Washington DC in the twenties, this is the story of young black girl Johnnie Mae Bynum, entrusted with the care of her younger sister Clara. When a group of girls goes swimming in the Potomac River one summer morning, Johnnie Mae allows her attention to wander. Clara tumbles off a rotten log into the water and drowns.
In the aftermath of the tragedy the Bynum family must pull together to survive, and Johnnie Mae must come to terms with her place in the world and decide the sort of woman she wishes to become.
