Charles II marched into London in 1660 to become the new king of a profoundly traumatized realm. For twenty years England, Scotland and Ireland had suffered violence, upheaval and insecurity. Each country had at different times been ripped apart by civil wars, and invasion. The failure of Cromwell's short lived British republic had opened the way for 'restoration', the attempt by Charles II and his supporters to turn back the clock and pretend that the experiments and the changes of two decades had never happened.
Tim Harris's major new book is the first in a generation to look afresh at one of the most dramatic periods in British history.
