Renée Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing none as each morning she turns her cases over to day shift detectives. A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor.
But one night she catches two cases she doesn't want to part with: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting. Ballard is determined not to give up at dawn. Against orders and her own partner's wishes, she works both cases by day while maintaining her shift by night.
As the cases entwine they pull her closer to her own demons and the reason she won't give up her job - no matter what the department throws at her.

Michael Connelly's police detective thriller introduces readers to a new character, Detective Renee Ballard. Ballard and her partner Jenkins work the late night shift for LAPD Hollywood Division. Smart and savvy, Ballard stands up for herself in a male dominated arena.
"The Late Show" is an interesting and engaging detective novel. I love how Renee's mind works to get justice for the victims in the crimes she attempts to solve. Renee is a very relatable character; bad things happen to her but she doesn't let it get her down - she fights back to keep her job and her sanity.
I thought I knew how the cases were connected, following clues laid out. However, yet again Connelly surprised me with the twist in the conclusion. I had picked the wrong perpetrator once again! I love how he did that, I didn't see it coming.
I really enjoyed this novel and would highly recommend it. Can't wait to read more about Renee Ballard.
