Colyn's father has taken Colyn's knife and forbidden him to cut any further windows or doors into the otherworld of Klarin. But a dragonette and a dragon have slipped through into this world and Colyn befriends them. His father warns him about the danger of getting too close to them, but Colyn rejects his warning - and that of his dog Kinzer, who has always protected him. The small dragon is cute, after all - at only three metres, almost the size of a pet, compared with the mighty dragon Colyn has slain in the otherworld. He calls it Bluey.
But he doesn't realise that the red dragon is the hatchling he spared when he attacked the next in the dragons lair. Colyn's misplaced love for this dragon almost blinds him to the need to be ready for the final battle with the otherworld.
