In the North Yorkshire medical practice of Hawkshead, changes are in store for Dr Laura Grant. The newcomer to the practice, Dr Piers Chandler, is keen to make his mark, but in his haste to change old ways, he rides roughshod over Ravensdale's more conservative inhabitants.
But soon there is a far greater problem for Laura to contend with. While treating two children for leukaemia, Laura identifies a possible cancer cluster. Fall out or leakage from a coastal nuclear processing plant are the prime suspects and before long emotions run high as an enquiry gets under way and villagers start to take sides.
