TV reporter Jemima Shore is at a loose end. Otherwise she might never have responded to the intriguing plea for help she receives from the head of Blessed Eleanor's Convent, her old school. The grisly remains of a nun have been discovered trapped in the ancient tower of the convent. The cause of death -- starvation. The victim turns out to be one of Jemima's old school friends, a nun who, it seems, held unusual power over the convent. When another nun dies Jemima realises that both the schoolgirls and the nuns know far more than they are willing to tell. Fear, suspicion and violence are stalking the hallowed corridors and grounds and it seems that the brutal realities of modern life have made themselves at home in the tranquil world of the beautiful convent.
