Mary Crane is on the run. In a moment of madness she took the forty thousand dollars she was meant to deposit in the bank for her estate agent boss, jumped into her car and fled north towards Fairvale and her fiance, Sam Loomis. But a wrong turn in the storm-tossed night took her on to a deserted road - deserted, that is, except for the unlit sign picked out by the car's headlight: "Motel - Vacancy".
Reassured by the simple face of proprietor Norman Bates, Mary thinks she'll stay the night. She can have a shower and rest before getting back on the road to Fairvale. But checking in turns out to be the worst decision she ever made . . .
