They say that the Thorn of Camorr can beat anyone in a fight. They say he steals from the rich and gives to the poor. They say he's part man, part myth and mostly street-corner rumour. And they are wrong on every count.

Only averagely tall, slender and god-awful with a sword, Locke Lamora is the fabled Thorn and the greatest weapons at his disposal are his wit and cunning. He steals from the rich - they're the only ones worth stealing from but the poor can go steal for themselves. What Locke cons, wheedles and tricks into his possession is strictly for him and his band of fellow con-artists and thieves: the Gentleman Bastards. Together their domain is the city of Camorr. Built of Elderglass by a race no-one remembers, its a city of shifting revels, filthy canals, baroque palaces and crowded cemeteries. Home to Dons, merchants, soldiers, beggars, cripples and feral children. And to Capa Barsavi, the criminal mastermind who runs the city.

Locke Lamora and his Gentlemen Bastards are small-time thieves, or at least that's what they tell everyone. Secretly, they're swindling the nobles out of their gold in violation of the delicate peace brokered between the police and underworld boss Capa Basarvi. It's the ultimate con. But when a new challenger arrives in town, Locke will get dragged into a civil war he'll need all his smarts to survive. This was a thoroughly entertaining book with witty characters, suspensful action all set against a vibrant venice-inspired medieval city. For those who thought Robin Hood should swear more and keep the money for himself. - Jai (QBD)

My favourite fantasy series to date
Biggest plus of the series its genuinely funny, with some great witty dialogue and banter. I fell in love with the characters, and was equally delighted with how they managed to get out of whatever scrape they found themselves in, and with the satisfying revenge that they usually managed to impart upon the antagonist before they went. Full of cons and rogues and delightful twists, its fresh and smart, and it makes you truly care about what happens to the characters. My favourite fantasy series to date. - Krystal
