Kellyanne Williamson has two imaginary friends, Pobby and Dingan. Her family humours her, but when her father leaves her friends alone on his opal mine one day, she fears for their lives. Her older disbelieving brother, Ashmol, dismisses her worry as stupid nonsense, until she becomes desperately ill, refusing to eat until Pobby and Dingan are found.
Ashmol's disbelief is overcome by his overwhelming need to save his sister from the death he senses sneaking up on her. In an effort to cheer her up and coax her back to life, he convinces the townsfolk of Lightning Ridge to look for the imaginary friends. The colourful eccentrics, and even those "real legend, tough miners", of that rugged little outpost, who, in their daily lives are engaged in believing that their are precious stones buried in the earth, are reluctant to believe Ashmol's story about his sister's missing friends - until it's almost too late.
'Pobby and Dingan' is a heartbreaking and very beautiful parable about the possibility of dreams, the preciousness of hope and how the imagination of one little girl, and the faith of a brother's love, can sustain the soul of a community. Ashmol tells us his tale with the honesty and integrity only a child can possess and his tale will capture your heart and thrill your soul.
