Adapted as a playscript by Valerie Windsor.
This is a vivid, moving play set it he 1930s. Helen, the eldest of seven children, traces the sudden decline in her family's fortune - from middle-class comfort to the squalid poverty of depressed Liverpool. Her resistance and determination, against all odds, become the focal point of the play.
The playscript may either be read in class or scenes acted out in drama lessons. The follow-up material provides numerous suggestions for improvisation, creative writing, discussion and role play. The historical background of the play is outlined and students are encouraged to compare the social issues of today with those of the 1930s. Photographs, personal reminiscences and newspaper articles all contribute to the stimulating nature of the further material.
