A Survey Of Introduced Wild Mammals
Twenty-five exotic mammal species have become established in Australia in the last 4000 years, and they now comprise some 10 per cent of Australia's mammal fauna. These include deliberate introductions, such as cattle, pigs, horses, cats and dogs; game animals such as foxes and rabbit; and accidental introductions, amongst them mice and rats.
Many of these introduced species have had a deleterious effect, directly or indirectly, on both agricultural productivity and natural ecosystems. This is a comprehensive attempt to provide a national overview of the distribution and abundance of wild mammals in Australia, together with a brief history of introductions and information on the ecology, behaviour, pest status, management and resource status of each species.
