Set in the fictitious third Jacobite rebellion, Redgauntlet tells of Darsie Latimer, a student of law, who becomes embroiled in a plot to put Prince Charles Edward on the British throne. Darsie, who has set out to discover the truth about his parentage, is kidnapped by his fanatical uncle, Edward Hugh Redgauntlet, a man of stately bearing and 'fatal frown' who, knowing Darsie's true identity, intends to make political use of him.
