Set in the fictitious third Jacobite rebellion, Redgauntlet tells of Darsie Latimer, a student of law, who becomes embroiled in a plot to put Prince Charles Edward on the British throne. Darsie, who has set out to discover the truth about his parentage, is kidnapped by his fanatical uncle, Edward Hugh Redgauntlet, a man of stately bearing and 'fatal frown' who, knowing Darsie's true identity, intends to make political use of him. Darsie's good friend, Alan Fairford, a Scottish lawyer, resolves to rescue him and in his pursuit and Darsie's confinement Scott creates an enthralling blend of fiction and history.
