A story of love, passion, cruelty and tragedy set against the backdrop of the First World War, Ford Madox Ford's monumental novel comes to our screens this autumn as a major BBC adaptation with a screenplay by the legendary playwright Tom Stoppard.
Film and TV stars such as Benedict Cumberbatch, Rupert Everett, Rebecca Hall and Miranda Richardson will come together to tell the story of aristocratic civil servant Christopher Tietjens's troubled relationship with his socialite wife, Sylvia and his love affair with high-spirited suffragette Valentine. Set between 1911 and the end of the First World War, the story also deals with Tietjens's traumas in France and Belgium, the experiences of the two women in wartime England and the erosion of the Edwardian values that Tietjens's holds dear.
