The Hidden Tradition of Homosexual Literature in English from 1748 to 1914
This fascinating anthology is the first to explore the world of hidden writing about homosexuality that appeared before works such as E M Forster's 'Maurice' introduced a new openness about the subject. A number of 18th- and 19th-century novels and stories carried coded portraits of homosexuals or references to homosexuality. Several of these could only be circulated privately; others were written in a way that meant the homosexual element would be recognisable only to a select few.
