Together with his wife Gill, he runs Oak Tree Nursery in North Yorkshire, England. After training at Askham Bryan College, his horticultural career progressed to working on large landscape schemes for commercial settings and small private domestic gardens. The use of grasses in these schemes deepened his interest in their use and cultivation. Since the late 1990s, Oak Tree Nursery has exhibited ornamental grass displays at all the major flower shows in the UK, being awarded the Royal Horticultural Society gold medal on many occasions.
