When fifteen-year-old Aaron Smith sets out to work on his photography assignment, he has no idea that his life is about to be thrown into chaos.
He finds a locked briefcase and a large hunting knife in the bushes. About an hour later he's knocked off his bicycle by a car as he's heading for home. The occupant of the car grabs his camera, rips the film out and smashes the camera on the path beside the stunned and injured boy.
Before he can reach home, he sees the car again and is chased on foot. He has no idea what he's done, his only instinct is to get away . . . Somehow the villains know where he lives and they stake out the place, preventing him from getting home. Aaron ends up using a public phone to call his guardian, Detective Sergeant Scott Backer, but is spotted and has to cut the call short.
Aaron spends the day hiding, then turns up at his brother's workplace that night. Afraid of putting the family in danger, Aaron convinces his brother to help him get to a cabin up at Wungong Dam, where he intends to stay hidden until Scott can find out what is going on.
